Vedanta Sangha

History

Ramakrishna Mission Sevashrama Kozhikode, had its beginning when a group of devotees formed a ‘Vedanta Sangha’ in a rented house in Chalapuram, Kozhikodein 1930. Gradually this center grew up as a permanent philanthropic center in Malabar area and in 1943 this center was officially affiliated to the well known spiritually oriented service organisation, the Ramakrishna Mission. Swami Nirvikarananda was the first Ramakrishna Mission monk to be sent here. Later, Swami Sekharananda joined him and bought five acres of land at Meenchanda, Calicut, the present site of the Ashrama.

In 1945, a Gurukulam was started with six orphan boys, who had lost their parents in a cholera epidemic. In 1954, a school was started by Swami Vipapmananda, who went door to door to ensure that the local girl children were educated. During the birth centenary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda in 1963, the Malayalam translation of The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda and The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna was done in Ramakrishna Mission Sevashrama, Kozhikode.

Swami Vivekananda has uttered “The National Ideals of India are renunciation and service; My idea of education is Gurugrihavasa”.

The young minds should be trained in such a way as they would be ready to absorb noble ideas and make themselves self-respecting, self-reliant, bold, intelligent and noble citizens of our country. It is with this end in view a Students Home and Schools were started. There was a Higher Elementary School, Primary School and Students’ Home for Boys. To give more facilities for education to the children of the neighbouring villages the Higher Elementary School was converted in to a High School in 1953. The High School was upgraded to Higher Secondary in the year 2000.

Ramakrishna Mission Sevashrama, Kozhikode also has a Medical unit which is providing free medical treatments to local people.Today this center is one of the premier institutions in the city creating an impact on the spiritual, cultural, health and educational fields.

The main activity of this center is running of a Lower Primary School, High School, and Higher Secondary School under its Management.
There are nearly 4000 students undergoing education in these institutions. Nearly 50% of our students are girls. The School sustains high academic levels and hence much sought after by the parents. It is a haven for the students from economically weaker sections of the society; the reason being the high standards it maintains and the values of human service it upholds in all realms of life. Over the years due to increase in the number of students, it has become difficult to provide school children with proper infrastructural facilities, such as more classrooms, better sanitary arrangements, good drinking water facility etc. Also, some of the school buildings, which are more than 70 years old, needs maintenance & thorough repair works.

Sri Ramakrishna Mission Sevashrama – Kozhikode was started in 1931. Gradually this center grew up as a permanent philanthropic center in Malabar area and in 1940 this center was officially affiliated to the well known spiritually oriented service organization – The Ramakrishna Mission.
